48 hour test has started!

After asking the doctor if we could stop adding the yucky tasting fortifiers altogether, the little boy and girl have starting eating like champs.  They went onto their own schedule yesterday afternoon, and since then they've been passing the "test" of waking up hungry within four hours, eating lots by bottle before getting tired, and gaining weight.  Today Theo and Sophie each sucked down 70 to 80 mL's!  Anticipated coming home date could be Monday afternoon!

Happy One Month Anniversary!

We had hoped that the little ones would be home by now, but that would have been unusual.  Nonetheless (quand meme!) they are progressing really well.  Theo is finally getting over his dislike for the taste of the supplement they add to the milk (it adds calories, which they need to grow their brains!) and Sophie is working hard at catching up with her brother.  Ever since starting to eat again she has been taking her milk by bottle and is now up to 38cc per feeding.  Theo eats 48cc each time.  They both eat with gusto! Today is the one-month anniversary of their birth date. We celebrated, as you'll see by the photos. It was extremely pleasurable. Mama was happy. Add caption Add caption

NICU - Semaine No. 4

First meal since Saturday for our little girl

Nurse Eileen, she's our favorite Finally!  Oh So Delicious! Sophie's side profile, does she have an Asian nose? Does anybody know Rudy from "Fat Albert"?   Theo showing us his "Blue Steel" Laurent with Sophie a couple of days ago... Gazing at Sophie without any tubes on her face on Monday.  At last we could see what she looks like!  Yay, Sophie got to eat this morning.  It was a small amount, so the nurse decided to give it to her by bottle.  It was her first bottle ever, nothing like starving a kid for almost a week to motivate her to try.  She seemed so happy afterwards.  I got to see her first smile! Looks like Theo might be coming home early next week!

Hit a rough patch

Yesterday was a tough day.  Little Miss Sophie had an impressive spit-up episode where she stopped breathing and turned red and was choking.  It was scary and left me shaken up for the rest of the day.  I was also tired, exhaustingly utterly tired.  And then little miss Sophie had a series of poopy diapers that didn't look quite normal.  The nurse kept checking in with the doctors and finally they decided that a series of blood tests and an x-ray of Sophie's tummy were necessary.  The results of the blood test said that she doesn't have an infection or bacteria, but they want do the labs again later tonight to make sure nothing has been incubating in her system.  The x-ray also doesn't conclusively show that everything is normal with her intestines.  So, they are erring on the conservative side and Sophie is on an IV again.  No feeding for 48 hrs.  More x-rays and blood tests along the way to chart her progress.  If everything is ok...

Milk factory is keeping up with demand Miss Sophie is sweetie pie Sophie sleeps with her mouth open, hee hee. Theo doesn't like studying race & ethnicity either!  Both kiddos have graduated to the "open" crib! Open crib, but still a lot of monitoring They check heart rate (between 100 and 170 is normal), oxygen saturation (want to stay above 90%), and respiration rate Theo concentrates hard on learning to breastfeed! Little bean! (But with BIG hands!) Multi-tasking Papa

Mathematics can be fun and if I were an elementary school teacher right now I would for sure have my students do that little calculation. Sophie and Theo are fed every 3h. Theo is eating a bit more, 36ml every 3h (34 for Sophie). That is 288ml for Theo and 272ml for Sophie per 24h.              Breast milk yields a proximately 75 calories for 100ml. So Theo is given 216 calories and Sophie 204 calories. Those little ones are somewhere around 52 times lighter than me (they are 4lbs and I am 210lbs on good days).             That means that if I were to eat proportionately the same amount they do right now I would have to ingest 52*216= 11.232 calories.             Today I did a 100miles road bike ride at a really sustain-race pace in 5h05. Acco...
